Hi, I’m John and for the last ten years, I’ve been helping people achieve their health and fitness goals using an unconventional approach known as health-first fitness.
This is something I discovered out of necessity when I was an athlete riddled with injuries, and stuck in physical therapy – feeling sorry for myself.
And today, I’m going to tell you a story that I haven’t shared with many people before, which will hopefully help you figure out if I’m your guy or not.
From Injured and Disabled to Indestructible
I believe that humans were designed to be strong, healthy, happy, and free for a lifetime. That we can function independently well-into old age. That graceful aging is not only possible, it’s our birthright. And if you’ve settled for anything less, then you don’t know what you’re missing.
My name is John Sifferman, and I’m a health-first fitness coach. And it’s remarkable that I can say that because not too long ago, I was a mess.
To make a very long story short, I ran myself into the ground. Years of poor training and lifestyle habits caught up with me until I could barely even walk normally – let alone run without severe pain (a difficult situation for a competitive runner). And ironically, this was the same year that I won the Athlete of the Year award at my school. So, sure, I was doing everything right by my coach’s, teacher’s, and parent’s standards, and yet, I ended up being weak and debilitated. And at the time, nobody knew how serious this problem was – not even me.
And eventually, despite my best intentions and a “suck it up” attitude, it got so bad that I couldn’t run at all – period. Climbing stairs became a challenge. Even walking hurt. And my knees were talking a foreign language. Over the course of the next few years that I spent in physical therapy, I was told by two different doctors that my injuries were so severe I would never be able to run again or otherwise function like a normal human being – for the rest of my life – which was a hard thing to swallow for a young man hoping for a career in the military. And at the time, I believed them, since nothing seemed to alleviate my symptoms and I couldn’t even run ten feet without significant pain.
The grand crescendo was that after working with several different physical therapists and finally finding one that showed some promise, my medical insurance company informed me that they would no longer be covering my PT sessions because I had maxed out the policy. I was still very much disabled from my own doing, and now I was on my own. That’s when I hit rock-bottom.
Obviously, these circumstances altered my life in every way. It felt like I had a rug pulled out from under me and I had landed flat on my face. After school, and upon accepting the fact that my childhood dream of a career in the military just wasn’t in the cards anymore, I went into a state of suppressed depression, the effects of which lingered with me almost ten years later – mainly because I was afraid to face the reality of my situation. And as silly as it sounds, I had to go through a grieving process before I could completely move on.
Fortunately, I got back on the right track within a few years of hearing the news that would change my life forever. You see, after being told that I would be permanently disabled, and after believing it for a few years, I realized how much this negative belief was harming not only me, but those around me – my family, friends, clients, and others. And I couldn’t take it anymore! I was sick and tired of what I had become.
So, after a dark period of being angry and feeling sorry for myself, I decided to prove those doctors wrong. But more importantly, I decided to prove to myself not only that I could get strong, healthy, and be able to run again, but that I could live a normal life on my terms and do the things I love. I was tired of sitting on the sidelines while my friends were playing soccer or Frisbee. And I was tired of suffering for weeks after making the foolish decision to go on a day hike again. And obviously, I was tired of not being able to run, which has been a passion of mine since high school.
Now, the way I saw it, if poor training habits got me into this mess, then good training habits might be able to get me out. So, I made up my mind – the turning point for me – and began a long journey of self-discovery that not only changed everything about the way I approach fitness, but everything about my life, too.
And today, things are quite different. I’m happy to report that these days, I not only walk and run as often and as far as I’d like on any given day, I also climb mountains and play sports. And while I have had some aches and pains here and there over the years, I actually haven’t experienced an injury in several years (i.e. well, if you don’t count that stupid paintballing accident…bachelor parties!), which is remarkable considering my history and how active I am these days.
Most importantly, I’m able to be the best husband and father that my wife and kids need and deserve. I have no trouble keeping up with my four young, hyperactive kids. And I plan to keep it that way.
Now, my story may be unique, but it certainly isn’t extraordinary. And I’m no super-athlete either. The fact of the matter is that there are many people who have faced much harder circumstances than I have who have overcome their challenges and become incredible athletes, runners, and fitness enthusiasts. Case in point: I still have all of my limbs. So, don’t think that I’m claiming to be something I’m not. I’m just an ordinary guy who loves to train and wants to share this love for fitness with others. You see, I’ve found that what I’ve learned from this journey has been invaluable not just to me, but for people from all walks of life. I’ll be accepting a small number of clients for a 3-month online coaching “block,” during which we will tackle your most important fitness goals.

I’m only looking for serious clients who are committed to succeeding, and are willing to commit to the full three months in order to prove it to me and to themselves.
If approved, then after your payment goes through, you will receive some paperwork to fill out (e.g. health questionnaire) and submit to me prior to working together.
We will have an initial consultation via phone or Skype – your preference – to chart a course for the next three months – establishing your most important goals and a basic plan to achieve them.
You will submit one weekly report to me via email detailing whatever feedback and/or progress / results necessary to achieve your goals. And I will send you one email update per week with your coaching instructions and any changes to your plan.

Why am I doing this?
I discovered the power of online coaching last year when an acquaintance of mine asked me – no, practically begged me – to help her with her health and fitness goals.
I agreed, and ever since then, I’ve coached her via email. And it’s been a really wonderful thing for both of us, in ways that I didn’t expect.
Something I learned is that I was able to encourage more meaningful change through online coaching (i.e. from a distance), than I often could with many of my in-person clients. There are several reasons for this, and I think the main one is that many personal training clients have trouble making the necessary changes at home. They do great while they’re with their trainer. They have good workouts, and leave feeling better than when they came in. But when they go home, they don’t make any changes to the other 165+ hours a week that they’re not training. And so, they perpetually struggle to achieve their goals.
Now, with online training, it’s less about the session, and more about what you do with the other 165+ hours per week. And obviously, with online coaching, all you get is homework. So, there’s a certain mentality going into it that it’s on YOU.
But here’s the thing: not only have I been able to help my friend with her health and fitness goals this past year – simply by communicating via email on a weekly basis – I’ve also learned a lot about her – what makes her tick, what she really struggles with, what she’s uniquely good at, and much more.

Am I too old for this? I don’t know. You tell me! But seriously, it’s never too late to start a new chapter in your health and fitness journey. As long as you are healthy enough to exercise (i.e. have been approved by your doctor), you aren’t too old for this program.
Do I need to be tech savvy to get coached online? If you can send and receive email, you have all of the technical skills necessary for this program, and you can get premium coaching from the comfort of your home.
I have an injury or another health problem. Is this program still for me? I’m sorry to hear that! Your plight is all too common. If your doctor has given you permission to work with a coach or trainer, we’ll work around whatever issues you’re dealing with. It comes with the territory.
I’m really busy. How much time do I need to devote to this? No more than 24 hours a day, at first. But seriously, you can devote as much as you want! This is personalized coaching, after all. You’ll tell me how much time that you can commit to training, and I’ll craft your program around your parameters.
I don’t have a gym membership. Will this be a problem? Not at all. I haven’t had one in years, nor do many of my clients. We need to make fitness work regardless of our life circumstances.
Shouldn’t I just hire a personal trainer? You absolutely could! And for many people, that’s the best option. However, there are some drawbacks to in-person training that my program was designed to address. Interestingly enough, I’ve found that I can get my clients better results from online coaching than from in-person personal training alone because it’s less about the session, and more about what you do with the other 167 hours per week.
