Sophisticating Pushups with Elbow Rotation by John Sifferman

Most people progress in their strength training program by increasing the load that they are using, or altering variables such as frequency, duration, intensity, volume, etc. What most people neglect is the inherent need for the body to learn more sophisticated movements. My Coach, Scott Sonnon, has showed me the errors in the thought process of Keep It Simple Stupid (KISS). The human body craves adaptation and sophistication – not simplicity. Sure, simple goals can be achieved by simple training programs. The process of building attributes like strength or endurance are pretty clear and achievable by anyone. However, simplicity in a training program only works for so long, and it seldom is effective for achieving any training goal other than “general conditioning.” When you have a specific need and goal in mind for movement quality, you need to sophisticate your movement.

The great thing about sophisticating basic movements is that it has a cumulative training effect. The more each exercise is sophisticated, the greater the training effect for your body and health. Not only are you working just strength and endurance in a pushup, for example, you are also working in joint mobility, coordination, balance, and perhaps even a feeling of competition (which is supremely important, especially when preparing for an athletic event.

Here is one example of what sophisticating movement looks like – an exercise I learned from RMAX Head Coach Ryan Murdock of www.rmaxinternational.com

Core Strengthening Exercises: Rotation – Video Series About The Best Strengthening Exercises for Your Abs and Core Muscles by John Sifferman

Last week, I posted the first video in our core strengthening exercises series. If you missed it, check it out here.

Today’s core strengthening exercise video is all about training rotational movements. The first thing that may come to mind is the oblique and the serratus anterior muscles (the little finger-like muscles on the sides of your ribs) – but practicing rotation involves a host of muscle groups. Each exercise I teach in this video is full-body in nature, and that’s how I recommend you approach core strengthening exercises. Train all of the body, all the time.

Here is a video with three different core strengthening exercises.

Getting Active Outdoors: your challenge from John Sifferman in Clough State Park

My mother used to tell me and my brothers to “go outside and play.” Even just 15 years ago, kids knew what that meant. Nowadays, I hear kids complain that they don’t know what to do, or that it’s boring outside. Most kids would rather be sitting in front of a TV or computer playing video games or chatting on instant messenger. What a different generation! It worries me, honestly, because we have gotten so far away from our roots as living, physical beings. We are literally bombarded with social pressures to exercise our brain, and neglect the body.

Sadly, many adults I know are the same way. Not only have so many adults forgotten how to play, they’ve forgotten how to enjoy nature. Many of my friends have to schedule outdoor activity weeks in advance because their schedules are so hectic. In my mind, there’s nothing wrong with being busy or having to schedule events in advance, but I find it sad when people don’t have but a few hours every week to themselves – especially when it is split up in 15-30 minute segments.

Back to my mothers advice – there’s a lot of wisdom in the phrase “go outside and play.” Before I get into it though, I want to share a quick video with you from this past weekend. I took a trip to Clough State Park in beautiful New Hampshire JUST BECAUSE.
