Exploring Tactical Gymnastics (TACGYM) During a BodyFlow Practice Session

Tactical Gymnastics (TACGYM) is an upcoming fitness program that applies gymnastics-based movement skills for tactical applications. It is scheduled to be released by RMAX International in the next few weeks.

I don’t know much about the program yet, but for those that are familiar with the Circular Strength Training System, it appears to be a BodyFlow-inspired TACFIT program. I started using BodyFlow years ago after reading the book and learning from the DVD’s, which are comprised of over 30 unique movements and several flow chains. Since that time, BodyFlow has evolved into Prasara BodyFlow Yoga (PBY). I know. It’s confusing!

My personal PBY practice has become a restorative module in my overall training program. I will often perform a short session of 10-20 minutes at the end of the day to wind down and relieve some residing muscular tension. PBY is also an outstanding tool for a cool down routine after a strenuous training session or for an active recovery session to release deeper tension every once in awhile. The following video was taken during one of my evening Prasara BodyFlow Yoga sessions (the 1st half of the session). Though it has a different purpose from tactical gymnastics, it contains some similar movements to give you an idea of what to expect from the upcoming TACGYM program.

(you’ll just have to watch to see if that’s really a face-plant or not)

There aren’t many training programs that I get legitimately excited about these days. The truth is that there are popular fitness products being released almost monthly, and most of them are complete duds – something I would never even bother looking at, let alone use in my own training program. That’s not the case with Scott Sonnon’s upcoming Tactical Gymnastics program.

I’ve been eagerly awaiting a program of this nature for years – long before I ever heard of anything like tactical gymnastics. I’ve been hoping for something that is not just an expanded version of BodyFlow, but a completely evolved system, and I have a hunch that’s exactly what TACGYM will be.

This teaser trailer was posted awhile ago, but if you haven’t seen it yet, you don’t want to miss it. We’ll be hearing a lot more about TACGYM in the next few weeks, and I’ll be sure to bring you the latest information here on Physical Living.

  1. I have to admit, this does look like an exciting development. Intu-Flow, Clubbells, some Kettlebell stuff (not most of it though), and this kind of TACGYM/Prasara Body-Flow Yoga are some of the most exciting fitness things on the market to me…especially when in the context of an attitude of play!

    I like your little sequence–was that improvised, or a structured routine? I recognize most of the movements, but the order was unique.

    1. That routine was improvised, but an evening “movement snack” is often a combination of routine/improv for me.

  2. Wow! You guys can move! I am the total antithesis of this kind of movement. Years of lifting and hardly stretching have left me with 1/50th of your movement skills. Talk about exposing a glaring weakness. Keep up the good work, you guys are incredible. I don’t think most people even realize this kind of movement is possible.Thanks, Mike.

    I, like you, John, am well-versed in the myriad CST/Tacfit programs, but have been awaiting something like Tacfit Gymnastics since I first bumped into the Intuflow program back in the spring of 2006 (then the natural progression of Flowfit, Forward Pressure, BodyFlow, etc, into clubbells, kettlebells….). As always, your blog here will be an incentive to leap.

  4. I have read that this a great low to moderate day workout. Would it be appropriate to use with other CST programs in place of the ones listed in those?

    1. Lisa,

      Scott would probably recommend that you follow each program as outlined, but you can definitely mix and match programs IMO. It’s all about your training goals and personal interests. Just know that each program is crafted very carefully and was designed to be used exclusively. So, you’d be entering uncharted waters if you decide to supplement one program with another.

  5. Hey jhon I know this is anm old post but I was womdering if you could answer anyways. I saw you performed a pocket wheel. Is that exercise part of tacgym?

    1. I’m sorry, Ramon, but I’m not familiar with that exercise name. Does it go by something else, or can you tell me, at which point in the video, that I’m performing the one you’re talking about?

      1. Thanks for the email, Ramon. That particular movement is not in the TACGYM curriculum, but is something that I incorporated from my Prasara yoga practice. I have been meaning to film a tutorial video for teaching a progression leading up to the pocket wheel for some time now, and I’ll bump it up on my list for you.

  6. John- I just found your site/blogs yesterday. Great detail in your reviews!! I have a decent bkgd in gymnastics (6 yrs competing), 4 yr with the Marines and teach personal defense. I am looking for a TACFIT program that I can do and share that requires the least amount of equipment as most of my instructing/time spend is done at parks, churches, Dojos, and everywhere else. Do you think TACGYM would be the right fit for me starting out? Thanks and keep up the great work!
