Interview with Shane Heins About Clubbell Training For Building Muscle

Shane Heins
CST Head Coach, Shane Heins

Below, you’ll find an interview with my friend, Shane Heins, who is a CST Head Coach and an expert in clubbell training. I had hoped to get him on the phone for 20-30 minutes to answer the most common questions about clubbell training for building muscle. What actually happened is that I got almost 90 minutes of both practical advice and deep philosophy, with clubbell-based muscle building at the center of the discussion.

This is a real treasure of an interview that goes way beyond training tips and strategies. You’ll learn all the in’s and out’s of clubbell training for muscle, explore a deep lifestyle philosophy that is interwoven into Shane’s training programs (can I just say it’s Physical Living at its core), and learn all about the man beneath the Mohawk (this is worth the full 90 minutes in-and-of-itself).

If you have any interest in Circular Strength Training, clubbells, or muscle building, it would be well-worth your time to learn from Shane in this interview. Check it out!

*I recommend you pause it and allow it to load for a minute or two before beginning to listen.

  1. Is there a way to download the audio? I typically like to have the ability to listen to these kind of interviews over and over again, especially during my cardio or periods when I’m traveling. Thanks.
    Alan

  2. John! It was an absolute pleasure doing this interview with you. The space you provide is a very relaxed comfortable one, like two old friends coming together, with nowhere to rush to, just a great opportunity to connect. It’s the “Cooaffee Tooalk” if the internet.

Your interviews are among my favourites and, like Alan, the ones I often go back to over and over.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you and the Family!

  3. Hey John,

Can you post a download link for this? I don’t often get a chance to listen to interviews while on computer and only access net at work (none at home) usually listen to them on mp3 player.

    Thank you!

  4. Yes, a download link would be great.
Shane is a smart guy. I will put him on the list of my favourite trainers. I always like trainers who have the same perspective on Physical Living as I have. :-)

  5. Thanks for the review, John! I did order CME (and Shane, please give John credit if I forgot to click through properly.) Shane, your new intro video is hilarious. It is taking forever to download all the videos but I forgive you for being such a character. ;^) The videos look great and very well done.

  6. Nice interview. I like where Shane is coming from–helping people who are in pain or whatever their real reason is, not looking a certain way that has been prescribed as desirable because it is rare and superficial.

  7. Nice interview awesome sounding program. So awesome that I decided it was finally time to embark on the clubbell journey. went to the rmax site to purchase and shipping is astronomical. will have to wait a bit longer before I can start now…that is a hefty freight. unexpected downturn there

    1. I hear ya, Brian. Shipping is killer. You don’t want to know how much I paid for all my clubbells either – prices came down significantly when RMAX switched to a new manufacturer. They used to be much more expensive, but it was worth it.

  8. i’m still on board but in a few more weeks.. have to do some re-budgeting.

oh one question for you john. on shane’s site it says that if you aren’t new to training and all you should go with 2x15lbs and one 35. I fully intend to use clubbells for the foreseeable future and have been mulling over the purchase long enough to know that its not a passing fad for me. I have also been bumming as you said you did with respect to borrowing… sorry for that long preface to a short question.

due to the costs associated with them.. would it be wise for me to go with the bruiser and just choke up way high for awhile in lieu of getting the 35? Its not an ego issue believe me, I left that in the dust years ago..this is just from a practicality standpoint and also trying to get the most mileage out of the large capital investment.

    1. That’s a difficult question to answer. I bought a single 45 when I got my 15’s, and though I was able to use it for a few exercises, I would have gotten a lot more mileage out of the 35 pounder. In hindsight, I would have been better off long-term with the 35. You’ll never truly outgrow either the 35 or 45, but the 35 will provide more initial options to you. So, I would probably recommend the 35, especially since you’re new to clubbells.
