This is a guest post by my friend Tom Venuto about the steady state cardio versus high intensity interval training cardio debate. There is a lot of misinformation going around concerning these topics, and many guru’s making some outrageous claims. I think Tom gets to the heart of the matter with this article, and I’ll let the information speak for itself.
High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) 5x Less Effective than Steady State Cardio???
High Intensity Interval Training, or HIIT for short, has been promoted as one of the most effective training methods ever to come down the pike, both for fat loss and for cardiovascular fitness. One of the most popular claims for HIIT is that it burns “9 times more fat” than conventional (steady state) cardio. This figure was extracted from a study performed by Angelo Tremblay at Laval University in 1994. But what if I told you that HIIT has never been proven to be 9 times more effective than regular cardio… What if I told you that the same study actually shows that HIIT is 5 times less effective than steady state cardio??? Read on and see the proof for yourself. Continue reading High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) 5x Less Effective than Steady State Cardio??? Guest Article by Tom Venuto CSCS, NSCA-CPT
I just posted a new interview with Tom Venuto on the BurnTheFat.com website. I cannot repost it here because it is copyrighted, but I wanted to let all my blog readers know about it because it’s a real gem.
Many fitness and weight loss experts come and go, but Tom Venuto has been around for a long time, and isn’t going anywhere but up. Tom is my go-to guy for anything relating to nutrition and fat loss. He has helped hundreds of thousands of people improve their lifestyles by changing habits and adopting a healthier lifestyle.
Even though Tom is a bodybuilder at heart, he has a wealth of health-first nutrition knowledge. Tom has been laboring away in research and academia almost as long as I have been alive, and has held many prestigious positions within the fitness industry including health club manager, best-selling author, and the founder of the internet’s premiere fat loss membership support community, the Burn the Fat: Inner Circle.

I always love getting packages in the mail, even when I already know what is coming. This time, I had a good feeling that I would be getting a copy of Tom Venuto’s best-selling book, but I couldn’t be sure. Tom sent me an obscure e-mail, briefly mentioning to watch the mail for a “gift.” I was brimming with anticipation all week, and then it finally arrived. Take a look at what was inside…
Most people spend their time worrying about the impending weight gain with the approaching holidays, rather than planning how to be in better shape after the holidays. If you’re the type who doesn’t take no for an answer and who takes action instead of just thinking about doing something, then listen up [...]
I have very little interest these days in all the media-hyped stories of dramatic, rapid losses of body weight. “Big losers” don’t impress me, for numerous reasons. For example, weight is not fat. “Weight” could be composed of mostly lean tissue, or it could be mostly water weight. In fact, I would go a step further and point out that rapid loss of bodyweight correlates very highly with a greater chance of relapse, weight re-gain and long term failure.
