I was privileged to be one of the first people to attend Erwan’s 5-day USA seminars at Summersville Lake, WV. That event has been one of the single most positive experiences I’ve ever had, and I would recommend it to anyone with even a hint of interest in sports, fitness, or any type of physical recreation. For five days and nights, I experienced an entirely foreign philosophy about physical living, and I absolutely loved it.

Combo training is one component of the MovNat coaching system. In terms of program design, combo training is to MovNat what circuit training is to a fitness workout. In MovNat combo training, you link together a chain of different movement skills and perform them one-after-another until the entire combo is complete. In all the combo’s we did during the seminar, I can’t remember resting at all between rounds – but I suppose Erwan would encourage this under certain circumstances.

MovNat combo training gives you an opportunity to:

develop mental toughness as you perform complex skills while under fatigue

practice smooth transitions through and between different movement skills

develop conditioning attributes such as strength and endurance through the circuit nature

Here is one of Erwan’s most recent videos (all of which, are superb!). In this video, you’ll witness one of Erwan’s MovNat combo’s in which he has compiled a set of skills that includes: crawling on all fours uphill (bear crawl style), climbing a horizontal tree, walking/balancing on the fallen tree, crawling on all fours downhill (crab walk style), and lifting/throwing a heavy stone (deadlift, power clean, push press). Check it out:

MovNat Combo Training Video

This is but a small glimpse into the MovNat coaching system, and there’s a lot more to combo training than you’ve just seen. I would encourage anyone reading this to attend one of Erwan’s seminars to experience MovNat for yourself.

I have discussed MovNat a couple of times here on Physical Living.

At long last, Erwan Le Corre has set a date for the first official MovNat training seminars in the United States. They will be held in West Virginia at the beautiful Summersville Lake. In case you’re not familiar with Erwan yet, take a look at his MovNat video:

MovNat – Erwan Le Corre – The Workout The World Forgot

You may also want to read the recent Men’s Health article “Wild Workout for the Real World.”

And I dug up this fantastic interview with him over at Conditioning Research: Interview with Erwan Le Corre.

In a little over 12 hours, both of Erwan’s seminars have already filled up (and Erwan is now trying to book the Summersville Lake resort for another week), and for good reason – this is a revolutionary philosophy about physical living, and physical culture enthusiasts are going to go BONKERS over the MovNat system in the coming months and years.

I’ve been working with Erwan to help him obtain his O-1 Visa that will allow him to move to the U.S. and teach MovNat on a more permanent basis, including certifying coaches in natural movement methods. I feel honored to be able to help someone that has so much to offer our sedentary, dis-eased, and physically disconnected culture. Erwan has a heart for people that want to rediscover the joy of natural human movement, and his passion is contagious.

If nothing else, I encourage you to check out Erwan’s articles above, and to visit his site at http://MovNat.com

If you want to act quickly on the seminars in WV, then I’d head over to this page quickly… I’m guessing the new dates will be booked within the next 24 hours or less.

My Feet

If you can live with the fact that some people will think you’re weird for not wearing shoes and still avoid the religious “barefooters” who drink the Kool-Aid, then I think you can greatly benefit from some barefoot living. Going barefoot is becoming increasingly popular in some social circles, and I’ve been hearing a lot about it recently. So, I compiled a listing or resources to give you a comprehensive perspective on the benefits of going barefoot anywhere – whether it’s barefoot running, barefoot walking, or barefoot training in the gym.

The Case For Going Barefoot

It turns out that most people not only have very weak feet and ankles, they also have immobile feet and ankles. This is largely due to over-engineered footwear being the norm across the civilized, modern world.

Think about it – what does putting on a work boot do to your foot in terms of mobility? It limits it to a pre-determined range of motion. Sure, it stabilizes your ankle and protects your toes from falling objects, but it also prevents your ankle from moving through a full (and natural) range of motion, which means over time your ankles and feet will get progressively weaker. Your feet will become less independent and able to protect themselves from injury, and more dependent on the work boots to prevent a sprained ankle or any other foot injury. This starts a vicious cycle of poor movement patterns, which eventually leads to injury or worse.

Najia Shakoor and Joel A. Block of the American College of Rheumatology (1) found that walking barefoot decreases loading on the lower extremity joints. Here is a snippet from their study conclusions:

It has long been appreciated that excessive loading of the lower extremities is associated with the onset and progression of knee osteoarthritis (OA); however, no attention has been given to the role that modern shoes may play in potentiating these aberrant loads. In the present study, we formally evaluated the differences in gait and joint loads that occur when patients with knee OA walk barefoot compared with when they walk in shoes. This study demonstrated that such patients undergo a significant reduction in their joint loads at both the knees and the hips while walking barefoot compared with when walking in their normal shoes. Moreover, whereas significant changes in several gait parameters were observed during barefoot walking, including changes in stride, cadence, joint ROM, and toeout angle, these changes in gait could not explain the significant reduction in loads at the joints. This suggests that the design of modern shoes may intrinsically predispose such patients to excessive loading of their lower extremities.

Michael Warburton of Gateway Physiotherapy (2) found that running in shoes appears to increase the risk of ankle sprains, plantar fasciitis and other chronic injuries of the lower limb. He also found that running in bare feet reduces oxygen consumption by a few percent = more efficiency. And I’ll agree with him that running shoes play an important protective role on some courses, in extreme weather conditions, and with certain pathologies of the lower limb.

Researchers Kong, Candelaria, and Smith from the University of Texas at El Paso (3) concluded that “runners should choose shoes for reasons other than cushioning technology.”

Phil Maffetone says in his book “In Fitness and in Health” (4, 1997):

For the most part, shoes are tested on machines, not people, because machines give the results the company wants and people don’t. A quick look in the medical journals will point out the abundant problems.

Did you know, for example, that the support systems in almost all shoes can weaken your ankles? And the soft, cushioned shoes of today can harm your feet? How about the height, in other words, the thickness of the sole? The farther above the ground you go in a shoe, the more unstable your foot becomes.

Scientific articles over the past decade or more strongly suggest that such protective features put in by shoe companies, including shock absorption and motion control actually increase the likelihood of injury.

Here’s a visual example of what happens to the body while running when wearing shoes versus barefoot:

Dr. Silverman from the New Jersey Sports Medicine and Performance Center created this video. This is the same runner on the same day, with no instruction given in between videos. On the left, the runner displays correct SHOELESS forefoot strike – good running technique. On the right, incorrect, wearing SHOES with heel strike, braking, and straining – incorrect and joint-damaging running technique.

A work boot is an extreme example that does the most damage to your feet over time (and to the rest of your body). Walking and running shoes and cross-trainers are still guilty of the same crime though, albeit to a lesser extent – they all limit your foot to a pre-determined movement pattern that is not natural. The take-home point is that wearing shoes will eventually lead to imbalances and injury. The other take-home point is that if you must wear shoes, take a minimalist view and adopt the philosophy of “less is better.”

The feet have ligaments and muscles just like the rest of the body, and they need to be exercised through a natural range of motion just like everything else. You wouldn’t put your hand in a cast before you go to work or to the gym, would you? (well, some people use gloves and wraps, which I almost always DO NOT recommend for these same reasons.)

Then why does our culture insist on doing the same thing to our feet? Well, for one – going barefoot doesn’t cost anything. It’s free, and that’s a pretty hard deal to beat for a shoe company. Obviously, the shoe execs want you to buy their shoes, and will tell you anything to get you to do it. So, there is advertising stating that shoes are better and healthier for your feet, and even for your performance – blah, blah, blah.

Like most messages in the health and fitness industry, this is only a half-truth. Sure, wearing shoes will help protect your feet from getting cut on glass or sharp rocks, etc. BUT, wearing an over-engineered shoe or boot will weaken your feet over time. So, it’s a catch 22! Protect your feet from the rough surfaces, but atrophy the muscles and ligaments of your feet.

And it makes sense too, how many shod runners do you know that don’t have an injury history longer than their laces? Sometimes, it seems like almost everyone who runs regularly has knee problems. Walk to any high school track and field meet and you’ll likely see half the team wearing knee wraps or taping from a sports medicine specialist. The sad truth is that these kids are usually better off than most adults.

And I’ll let you in on a little secret. I’ve been there, done that, too. I wore running shoes every season of Fall Cross Country Running, Winter Track, and Spring Track and Field in high school – and I had the injuries to prove it (3 years in physical therapy to rehabilitate myself from over-training via long distance running – anecdotal evidence, I know).

Now, that’s just the movement half of the story. Some other problems that shoes contribute to include: athlete’s foot, deformed toes, hammer toes, and ingrown toenails.

Now we know the drawbacks of wearing shoes, what about the benefits of going shoeless…

We already know that wearing shoes leads to injury such as plantar fasciitis, shortened calf muscles, knee osteoarthritis, tight ilial tibial bands, and lower back pain, among many other things. We also already know that running barefoot takes about 4% less energy than running with shoes. So, here are some of the other benefits of barefooting.

Running or walking barefoot will help to naturally improve your gait and carriage, which will improve your performance. More effeciency = more speed.

Going barefoot will help to develop strength in the muscles and ligaments in your feet, legs, and hips that are inhibited and disintegrated when wearing shoes.

You won’t get athletes foot or other odd foot odors if you aren’t getting sweaty from unventilated shoes.

There’s nothing like walking on sand or grass in your bare feet. Seriously, the more you can enjoy nature, the better for your well-being.

It’s free. I don’t even want to know how much I’ve spent on high class running shoes in the past… going barefoot will save you a lot of money!

So, where do we draw the line? Is there a healthy balance?

Obviously, we can’t just go barefoot all the time and everywhere. Society, propriety, and etiquette dictate when and where shoes are most appropriate, but you don’t need to wear them all the time. If you’re like me, then you’re looking for the most “bang for your buck” benefits without getting sucked into a subculture of hippies and other barefoot nerds.

That’s easy.

Just start to go barefoot whenever you can – around the house, around your yard, and at the park or the beach. These are easy transitions to barefoot living, and probably a better idea anyway. If you’re accustomed to wearing footwear, then you will want to “break your feet in” to barefoot walking. The muscles and ligaments will need to strengthen before you can jump into full-time barefoot walking without injury – not to mention your soles too. You may find that after an hour or two of being barefoot, the tiny muscles in your feet start to get sore. That’s because they are now moving in a range of motion that they are not used to.

Progress intuitively, and only go barefoot when you’re comfortable. You may find that some surfaces hurt a little and have you waving your arms with every step, but eventually, your feet will be so tough (read tolerant, not insensitive), that you’ll be able to run over some pretty rough surfaces while barefoot like MovNat founder Erwan Le Corre:

Bare Minimum Footwear Alternatives

Of course, there are times when we simply do need to wear shoes. So, when going barefoot is not an option, there are some good minimalist alternatives.

In general, look for footwear that allows the most freedom of movement. If the shoe can bend, flex, and twist easily, it’s a winner. Some shoes are better than others, but I have found that Nike Free’s are a somewhat viable option (minus the tall heel), and some Puma shoes are also decent. My wife and I both wear Puma’s (rawwwr!)

I’ve heard nothing but good reports about Vivo Barefoot shoes. There are many different styles from dress, to casuals, to athletic:

Vibram Five Fingers have received a lot of positive reports:

Traditional Huarache’s by Barefoot Ted (the barefoot guru of the internet – you’ll definitely want to check out his site if barefoot walking or running interests you.):

Barefoot Ted has been testing these huarache sandals for years. Now, he makes them and sells them too. All he needs from you is payment and a paper tracing of your feet. If you can get past the “ancient empire” look, they will serve you well. He even has a free how-to guide, teaching you how to make your own huarache’s at home – or buy one of his kit’s to do-it-yourself.

The Bottom Line

Go barefoot whenever you can and only where you are comfortable. Shop for shoes that will allow the most freedom of movement around your feet and ankle joints. The less and lighter, the better for your health.

If anyone asks why you’re not wearing shoes, just look them directly in the eye, point up towards the sky, and say “the aliens took them.”

The Society for Barefoot Living would like you to know that…

It is healthy for your feet to go barefoot.

It is not against the law to go barefoot into any kind of establishment including restaurants.

It is also not against any health department regulation.

It is not against the law to drive barefoot.

zombie or alien? I think we can rule human out...

I read an article not too long ago that was explaining what a world full of zombies would be like – literally, a Zombie Nation full of brain dead zombies. Not too long after that, I read a short article titled “We Live in a Zoo.” Just today, I read an article explaining us as aliens on our own planet!

These are from three different authors, mind you. Coincidence? I think not. It’s merely an illusion of coincidence. Well, I’ve taken this theme to heart and have come up with my own interpretation of the modern world we live in. Here’s is a glimpse into the zombie nation, the human zoo, and the aliens at home environment…

I think Erwan Le Corre hit’s it on the head when he says,

The “zoo” is a modern, global and growing phenomenon generated by the powerful combination of social conventions, technological environment and commercial pressures. Increasingly disconnected from the natural world and their true nature, zoo humans are suffering physically, mentally and spiritually.

We see this disconnect between the natural world and humanity everyday.

Almost everyone lives an almost completely sedentary life. Most adults would actually struggle to walk a couple of miles. It would be a rarity to find someone that doesn’t feel pain during or after a walk like this – especially the next day. Almost nobody enjoys physical activity – it’s thought of as work instead of play. Being physically active is the exception instead of the norm.

Food is no longer personally grown, gathered, or hunted – it is freely available just a short drive away. The same food is available year round, irregardless of seasons. You can eat whatever you want, whenever you want, as long as you have money you will have a full stomach – likely full of pesticides, fertilizers, other chemicals, and genetically modified nutrients.

Nobody has time to do anything anymore. There isn’t enough time to cook and eat healthy meals, no time to exercise, no time to sleep, and definitely no time for playing and recreation. Vacations are almost non-existent, weekend trips are rare, and daily recreation is usually limited to sitting in front of the TV for hours on end. Oh yeah, and there also isn’t enough time for meditation, prayer, reading, hobbies, or practically anything else that people WANT to be doing. We have drive-thru’s, express lanes, and swipe cards all contributing on our behalf to alleviate our temporal poverty.

Kids play video games and surf the internet for hours on end – after they have sat still for 7 hours in the classroom. The ones who play sports are forced into fulfilling their parents dreams instead of pursuing their own interests. They associate physical activity with work that is brutally difficult. They are bombarded with the message of “it’s a hard world out there, so you better learn no pain, no gain!” School boards are more concerned with raising test scores that PE requirements because the mind is incorrectly thought to be more important than the body.

There is also an extreme disconnect between nature itself. People wear shoes, sunglasses, bug spray, and sunscreen. They would rather have weak feet, weak eyes, and rub poison on their skin than experience nature. Going outside is for tree-huggers, hippies, and other extremists.

Noise is everywhere! Alarm clocks, TV’s, radios, CD players, Ipods, email notifications, cell phones, cars and trucks, airplanes, lawnmowers, cash registers, and barking dogs (please don’t breed dogs that bark all the time!). The media is screaming FEAR, STRESS, and ANXIETY about things that individuals have no control over. In fact, it’s getting harder and harder to find a quiet place anywhere.

Dis-ease is killing millions of people at sky-rocketing rates. Diabetes, cancer, heart disease, and osteoarthritis are widespread afflictions even though they are almost completely preventable along with most other health problems. Doctors are more focused on treating the symptoms of disease after it happens, instead of educating their patients about how to prevent dis-ease.

Modern society is getting more and more distant from its natural heritage every day. There are a lot of issues contributing to this, but I think it all hinges on personal responsibility. Few people act responsibly anymore, and most people only care about themselves. That’s the bottom line, and that’s what is leading to the physical, psychological, and spiritual suffering nationwide and worldwide.

Instead of contributing to the problem, I’m going to try and alter my perception of the world around me and double my efforts to question and defy conventional thought and wisdom.

I read this quote in an article from the April 2009 edition of Men’s Health magazine (It’s a great article, I highly recommend you check it out here). This section is talking about Erwan Le Corre, the founder of MovNat, and how he has stepped outside of fitness routine and has adopted a more playful method of pursuing fitness and health. I posted a quick mini-review of his promotional video – which is awesome, by the way. You should check that out before you read this, if you haven’t already: Ditch the Zoo, and Get Back to Nature

From Men’s Health article:

well, maybe some dogs do... but not for an hour!

But Le Corre’s most important breakthrough might be the way he’s welded purpose and playfulness. When he jumps and tumbles and chucks stuff around, he looks just like a kid mucking in the backyard. Zehr believes that could be the way we’re hardwired to work out. “You never see your dog running nonstop around and around in a circle for an hour,” he points out. “If he did, you’d think there was something wrong with him. Instead, he’ll chase something, roll around, sprint, rest, mix things up. Animal play has a purpose, and it’s not hard to surmise that human play should as well.”

What an awesome perspective for human fitness and movement, Le Corre acting just like a kid playing in the back yard. This is how we should view our own fitness training, like it’s the best part of our day. “I can’t WAIT til I can go out and train! (play)

But what really struck me was the note about how dogs never run around in circles for an hour – they play, which involves all sorts of athletic maneuvering.

There is no doubt that we have forgotten how to play in our culture (myself included – I almost entirely forgot how to play once I entered high school and was bombarded with structure, routine, and expectations.) I am slowly trying to creep out of that and enjoy the benefits that play and fun offer us.

We see this inability to comprehend or practice “play” most obviously in fitness culture. Go to any “health club” and you’ll see what I mean. Take a walk over by the cardio machines where people are literally running or stepping in place. Not only that, but they are trying to block the experience of their own personal transformation. They don’t even want to think about exercising – they just want to “put in the time.” GET IN, GET OUT!

This is why we see people reading books and magazines, listening to their ipod, or watching TV while they trot, row, or pedal. They view exercise as work, instead of play.

Now, hear my heart on this. I’m not saying that exercise machines are bad because they serve a tremendous need in our modern society. I understand the need for convenience, I understand the need to “shut everything out” and to de-stress from a long day. I used treadmills and exercise bikes for entire sports seasons during the wintertime. I get it!

But I’ll tell you one thing. I’ve been on both sides of the fence, and while figuratively running around in circles has it’s health benefits (burning calories, etc.), I prefer the freedom and happiness that comes from being actively involved in my fitness, by being mindful of my movement and health, by accomplishing things that most people wouldn’t dare attempt (and things that I wouldn’t have dared attempt before!).

I’ve tasted the benefits that free expression of fitness provides, and I don’t want to try another flavor. I’m satisfied, and at the same time, dissatisfied because I know there is so much more. The rabbit hole goes so very deep when it comes to exploring the depths of your athletic potential.

Now, I know that most of my readers aren’t the type that exercises on cardio or any machines at all. I’m confident that you know the risk:benefit ratio when it comes to using any type of machine – and that I don’t recommend using them except in the cases of rehabilitation under the guidance of a qualified physical therapist. But just because you’re not using machines, doesn’t mean that you are completely free within your training program.

Some training methods and programs have been around long enough that they have gained the ability to trick us into thinking that they are the “end all, be all” – just out of being the common practice for so long. It’s not the truth. Just this week, I debated with someone over the issue of using barbells vs dumbbells. This guy couldn’t understand that barbells are NOT the best training tool for all goals. Of course, they have value, of course they are useful, and of course they are the best tool for their intended purpose – lifting weights such as in powerlifting and olympic weightlifting. But they aren’t the absolute BEST training tool for ALL strength-related goals. I thought this was common sense, but apparently not. This is a perfect example of being trapped within a dogma, a mentality, the notion that “I’ve got it all figured out.”

We’ve been taught that lifting weights and cardio are the secret to long-term health. Sure, they are valuable, but they are NOT the only path to enlightenment, and they certainly aren’t the END ALL, BE ALL.

I’ll tell ya one thing, I’m more inclined to trust my gut feeling, and my instincts, when it comes to training. Of course, I look to what has already been theorized and proven for guidance, but I don’t set up limits or boundaries based on what I’ve read or heard. I know that paradigm after paradigm has been broken about health and fitness, and it’s going to keep happening – and I’m going to be one of the ones breaking them (and so are you since you’re here challenging your beliefs, saying no to status quo, and committing to positive change).

If you feel trapped in a program, it’s because you ARE trapped – your intuition is spot-on and you should trust yourself. If you aren’t feeling stronger, healthier, and happier because of your training – then your program isn’t serving you well. If you get injured constantly, then your program isn’t serving you well. If you haven’t made consistent, measurable progress in the last month, then your program isn’t serving your well. You could be setting personal records on a weekly basis. You could be shifting your focus away from training and towards playing, away from numbers and towards performance, away from structure/routine and towards your own expression of freedom. There is so much more out there to be had than just lifting weights and cardio.

To your health and success,

Fitness Professional

P.S. One practical step that I took to start challenging my beliefs about training was by adopting a daily joint mobility practice, and I began with the Intu-Flow Longevity System. I’ve practiced this everyday for the past 3 years and can’t say enough about the benefits I’ve experienced. I describe this as likened to a key that opens a secret garden of human movement expression, and I now understand why joint mobility training is often referred to as the “Fountain of Youth. Check it out here:
